What is a Doula? "A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible." (DONA International)

A doula
... provides continuous emotional and physical support to mothers and their partners before, during and after labor and delivery.
... is knowledgable about the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
... informs and advocates for families, giving them the tools they need to make choices and plan for the best possible experience and outcome
... is experienced in non-pharmaceutical pain management
... nurtures and encourages a woman and her partner throughout her labor and delivery
... assists with practical needs during labor
... facilitates for the participation of the partner at his/her comfort level

A doula does NOT...
...perform any medical tasks or give medical advice
...project their own preferences or beliefs about birth on to your situation
...replace your partner or loved ones in the labor process

Multiple studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. (www.dona.org)

POPPY

My name is Poppy Ferrer and I am a certifying doula (DONA), with a long history of love and respect for birth.  I have served as a doula for friends and family throughout the years, long before ever hearing the word doula. I have always been an awe of childbirth and the birthing woman.  Starting at the age of five years old, when my own mother was tending to women in labor. As a young teenage mother, I was vigorously educated myself  in all things pregnancy and childbirth.  My fourth birth changed my thoughts on birth and how I could actively engage in or have a say in what I wanted. I  deliver quickly and I saw my physician maybe 10 minutes total. He did not even congratulate me, it was just a day at the office for him but not for me, I needed more. With my fifth and last baby, we decided to have a home birth.

With my children growing up and my time and attention has returned to my own passions. I began teaching childbirth classes at a local crisis pregnancy center. This opportunity has reignited my heart and love for the birthing mother and the blossoming new family.
